Organic food products are recently gaining popularity around the globe. Organic food products are produced in an organic/natural way. They are free from chemical fertilisers, synthetic pesticides or GMOs. Organic fruits and vegetables are grown naturally which keeps the soil's nutritional value intact. Organic vegetables are free from GMOs or hormonal injections to prolong their lifespan. What is Organic Farming?


Organic farming is the process through which a food product is grown. Fruits and vegetables are grown naturally without using GMOs or harsh chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Natural fertilizers are used for organic farming. There are specific harmless chemical fertilizers which are permitted by the Government for organic farming. Organic farmers have to follow the organic farming guidelines to label their products as "Organic". Organic farming promotes a healthy and sustainable environment.

What Are Organic Food Products?


Organic food products are grown organically. Organic fruits and vegetables contain less amount of chemical fertilizers or pesticides compared to conventionally grown food products. Organic food products include a wide variety of food products such as meat, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains and pulses.

Features of Organic Food Products

  1. Organic food contains less chemical fertilizers/pesticides

Organic food products are not completely free from chemical fertilizers/pesticides. The Government has permitted to use of specific chemical fertilizers/pesticides, which are harmless to human health. The pesticide residues in organic food products are low compared to conventionally grown food products.


Some natural pesticides/fertilizers are allowed for organic farming including:

  • light oils

  • copper

  • biological substances

  • sulphur

  • pyrethrins

2. Nutrition Content in Organic Food


Several studies were conducted to compare the nutritional content of organic food products and conventionally grown food products. Some research studies came up with the conclusion that organic food products are:

  • High Vitamin C elements

  • Low nitrate levels

  • High levels of some minerals such as magnesium, iron and phosphorous

  • Apples

  • Green leafy vegetables

  • Cherry tomatoes

  • Strawberries

You can buy exotic vegetables from any local store.

3. Organic food ethics


Organic meat is free from hormonal injections and antibiotics, which increase the nutritional value present in the meat. Organic food products reduce chemical or synthetic elements in your body, which impact long-term health. Organic farming has a positive impact on the environment and health. Organic fruits and vegetables are free from GMOs or hormonal injections.

4. Organic food is environmentally friendly


Organic farming contributes to a healthier and sustainable use of natural resources. Organic farming land is not exploited through rigid farming (monocropping). Organic farming retains the soil quality and keeps the land healthy by reducing the use of chemical or synthetic chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers diversify their crops and use nature-based fertilizers and pesticides such as animal manure or green manure. Organic food products positively impact human health and the environment.


Conclusion:


Organic food products are expensive compared to conventionally grown food products and the Government is taking measures to expand the organic sector and increase production. Organic food products must follow set guidelines to label the food items "Organic".
